OPERATION SKYLIFT

Because of the severe icing conditions in the Eastern Arctic region of Canada which makes supplying of settlements in the area by ship possible only during the summer months, air-sea transportation using helicopters has been developed to reduce the time and expense of supply. Sikorsky S-64E Skycrane helicopters used in conjunction with a specially configured ship have enabled the operators to deliver 2,162 tons during a thirty-two day trial to places as much as six miles from the ship in an economical and efficient manner. The ship was specially masted and the hatches designed for efficient and safe discharge of both the general cargo and containerized cargo which was handled by the helicopters. Special slings were utilized for the loading, carrying, and discharging operations of the helicopter. The conclusion is that the use of helicopters for the ship-to-shore delivery of replenishment material in the far north is a practical, economic, and reliable method.
