AUTOMATED LIQUID CARGO HANDLING SYSTEMS
The use of an automated system in the handling of liquid cargoes has proven itself to be a beneficial method of cargo loading provided that the cooperation of the ship's officers is received. The automated cargo handling system yields an increased operational efficiency as well as other listed benefits including the elimination of cargo contamination and increased reliability in the loading procedure. Automated cargo handling systems are not used extensively in the rapidly increasing fleet bulk (chemical) carriers because of equipment, and cost. Remote control, automated handling systems might be used to advantage on liquefied gas carriers provided that a means of controlling the program for automation be developed. The author also states that computors are being evaluated for use as automated cargo handling control units for LNG and other type cargoes.
