A LABORATORY INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF LEACHING ON THE COMPRESSIBILITY AND SHEAR STRENGTH OF NORWEGIAN MARING CLAYS
Leaching experiments with undisturbed and remoulded samples of Norwegian marine clay have shown that the quasi-preconsolidation pressure (pc) which the soil has developed is decreased and a spontaneous consolidation occurs when the porewater salinity is reduced. The decrease in pc and the amount of spontaneous consolidation is dependent on the degree of salinity reduction with the major effect occurring when the salinity has been reduced below 2 g/litre. The spontaneous consolidation is interpreted to represent an increase in the rate of delayed consolidation rather than a decrease of the shear strength below the in situ shear stresses. Data accumulated during the experiments indicate that the major changes in the liquid and plastic limits, remoulded shear strength and sensitivity of the Norwegian marine clays occur after the salinity has been reduced below 2 g/litre. /Author/
