WINTER 1981 TRAFFICABILITY TESTS OF THE USCGC POLAR SEA
Environmental and ship performance data were collected aboard the USCGC POLAR SEA in January-March 1981 as part of a multi-year program to make an operational assessment on the feasibility of a year-round marine transportation system (including offshore structures) serving Alaska. Volume 1 contains brief descriptions and summaries of the entire program. Volume 2 focuses on measured and observed ice conditions during the ship's transit in the Bering and Chukchi Seas. Volume 3 deals with the performance of the icebreakers from the ice edge in the South Bering Sea to the North Chukchi Sea at Point Barrow, Alaska. Volume 4 gives a description of transit time predictions for commercial icebreaking ships along the route from Unimak Pass to the North Chukchi Sea. Volume 5 analyzes the results of a series of bollard pull, tow-rope pull and free- route propulsion tests conducted in Puget Sound. In volume 6, the results of an analysis of trafficability data are compared with model ice resistance tests, theoretical predictions, and available full-scale data. Volume 7 focuses on the structural adequacy of the POLAR SEA's hull. Volume 8 describes a method used to calculate ice forces resulting from transiting pressure ridges. Volume 9 presents data on the vibratory response of the POLAR SEA to ice induced loads. Volume 10 provides specifications and installation details for the POLAR SEA's instrumentation system, while volume 11 provides documentation for computer programs used for data acquisition and analysis aboard the POLAR SEA.
