MOTORIST TRAVELER AND THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM: AN EXPLORATORY ANALYSIS

The information developed in this article raises basic questions about the nature of services which should be provided to the motorist traveler along the interstate system. Logically, such services as food, lodging, and gasoline must be provided to motorists. In properly responding to the needs of motorists on the system, close attention must be given to such dimensions of the problem as factors influencing patronage decisions, the combinations of stops most likely to be made, and the extent of preplanning engaged in prior to starting a trip. The research has revealed a perceived need for additional information centers along the system. The question of roadside telephones and other emergency services should be explored more thoroughly.
