SPATIAL ABSTRACTION IN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING: PROBLEM ANALYSIS AND EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN OF A RESEARCH PROJECT
Two phases of a research project on spatial abstraction in transportation: planning the problem analysis and an experimental design are described. The project deals with the design of model representations (zoning systems, network models, etc.) of the spatial dimension of a planning situation, and with the consequences of their use in the transportation planning process. The problem analysis is followed by a detailed statement of the problems to be tackled. Next, an outline is given of the proposed research approach based on computer simulations, using a real city as the object of a case study. The experimental design selected for the first part of the study (traffic assignment) is described and compared with research designs by other researchers. /TRRL/
