ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MAINTENANCE: SYNTHESIS OF TECHNICAL ISSUES
This report develops and substantiates research and development recommendations for the use of artificial intelligence in improving military hardware maintenance. The genesis of this report was the October 1983 Artificial Intelligence in Maintenance Joint Services Workshop, the proceedings of which have been published by the Air Force Human Resources Laboratory (AFHRL-TR-84-25). The first chapter presents an executive summary and recommendations. The second provides background material on the maintenance problem and artificial intelligence theory and practice. The remaining three chapters present in-depth analyses of integral aspects of maintenance: the automated management of hardware failure, the development and use of human resources, and the larger organizational context of maintenance.
