ROADWAY DESIGN IN SEASONAL FROST AREAS

This report presents the results of a comprehensive review and assessment of current practice in roadway design in seasonal frost areas. Information is presented on the mechanisms of frost heaving and thaw weakening, the factors that contribute to frost problems, criteria for estimating frost susceptibility, surveying practices for locating areas of detrimental frost action, subgrade treatment and drainage to minimize the effects of frost action, and the structural design of pavements to accommodate the influences of frost action. Research needs are identified.
