EARTH VIBRATION CAUSED BY HEAVY TRAINS
SVANGNINGSRORELSER I JORD
During the last 20 years investigations have been made by the Geotechnical Department of the SJ about vibrations in the earth caused by blasting, pile driving and by heavy train traffic. During the last years the train loads have increased and also the speed of the trains. The oscillations appear mostly in areas with cohesive soils. The vibration wave form is often harmonic with low frequencies and high amplitudes. Within usual frequency ranges, 0.10 Hz, resonance phenomena appear in the earth as well as in buildings. These phenomena can affect the stability conditions and cause high additional stresses in constructions, and also become very disagreeable to people nearby. The influence depends upon the mass of the train, the distribution of power per axle, the characteristics of the superstructure and of the track as well as the speed of the trains.
