STREETS FOR PEOPLE
Comprehensive urban and transport planning makes it possible to limit traffic in congested city areas and even to exclude the automobile from certain streets without disrupting commercial activities. This report illustrates the experience of cities in OECD member countries in creating an improved urban environment with car-free areas or pedestrian zones. The book describes these pedestrian zones, their planning, the implementation of complementary policies, their equipment, municipal design, their effect on the urban economy and their influence on the well-being of townspeople. Maps, graphs and photographs show the benefits of the new strategy that helps to save resources and which is generally implemented at low cost.
