DEVELOPMENT OF IHI FLAT TANK SYSTEM FOR THE NEW LNG CARRIER
The principle of this system is to absorbe distortions occurring at tank corners, these distortions derive from contraction due to cooling and liquid pressure. The design incorporates the wave statistics theory, "Endurance Limit Design" (concept of fatigue design) and ISTRAN, developed by IHI with the new technique of finite element method. The theory was confirmed by a model test using a 1/4.4 scale model. The cooling test was successfully performed with the secondary barrier and insulation of plywood lattice construction, filled with Polyurethane foam and Phenolic foam. The fabrication technique of Aluminum alloy was established on the basis of IHI land storage tank fabrication techniques, and proven with a full-sized corner model. Due to the development of the "Horizontal Insertion Building Method" and "Over-size Building Method," the problem of accuracy was practically solved. With completion of the study of Q.C. and repairing method studies, IHI has completed the preparatory study for building the LNG carrier with this system.
