KILOWATTHOURS VS. LITERS
To compare today's electric vehicle with its gasoline -powered competitor the author examined published test results of two different models of limited performance (lead-acid-battery-powered)electric automobile prototypes and assembled established data available on electric vehicles as well as on conventinal gasoline-powered cars. He posited a hypothetical electric car of the future that would weigh 1430 kg and would have body design and road losses similar to those of a conventinal car of equal weight. The electric car of the future will consume about 72 percent of the energy required by its gasoline -using counterpart, 1.32 kwh of coal fed to the power plant against 1.84 kwh of crude oil fed to the refinery for each kilometer of driving. The impact of the electric car on energy demand from power generating plants will depend on usage variables.
