A SURVEY ON ACCEPTABLE SHIP MOVEMENTS IN HARBORS
This survey was initiated to get practical information for use in port planning. Questionnaires were sent out trying to get this information from shipmasters on acceptable wave action and ship movements in ports. This paper is based on replies to this questionnaire, covering a range of ship sizes and types from small fishing vessels to supertankers of 250,000 dwt. The type of questions asked are given, and the results are mostly presented in average values. The results of this investigation show a wide scatter, but the most dangerous ship movements, in the opinion of the shipmasters who responded, are given. Other conclusions, which vary depending on the size of the vessel, are also given in the article.
