FREE VIBRATIONS OF FLUID-BORNE STRUCTURES: INVESTIGATIONS ON A SIMPLE MODEL
This paper describes experiments performed on a simple model on the problem of the response of a ship hull to excitation from such sources as waves and the propeller. One of the methods of evaluating the response of a structure to excitation is the normal mode method, and this is described and explained. A finite element model was used to evaluate the stiffness and inertial properties of the structure. A complete description of the facilities used in the experiment, as well as the structure itself and the fluid which was used, is included. Descriptions of the experiment and the experimental procedure are given, and the results are discussed. Conclusions based on the experimental results are also presented.
