TERRAIN EVALUATION MANUAL

This manual is concerned with terrain evaluation. It covers the stages of a site investigation up to the point where ground investigation takes over. The first part sets out the general procedure by which the main terrain evaluation techniques are applied at each stage of site investigation. The background information required, such as topological and geological maps, is also discussed. The second part describes terrain classification methods and procedures. The interpretation of aerial photographs and satellite images is covered in some detail. Appendices provide the following information. 1) Data on the formation, occurrence and location of natural gravels. Advice on the procedure for finding gravel road construction materials is also provided. 2) Advice on the interpretation of geological maps. 3) A glossary of geological terms. 4) A glossary of remote sensing. The manual is especially relevant to the construction and planning of low cost roads in developing countries.
