SUBBASE/CAPPING MATERIALS. A LITERATURE STUDY
BUNDSIKRINGSMATERIALER. LITTERATURSTUDIE MED SAERLIG HENBLIK PAA VURDERING AF PERMABILITETSFORHOLDENE
The Note includes the result of literature studies regarding subbase/capping layers. Various foreign and Danish Standards for subbase/capping materials are mentioned. The connection found in the literature between Pd max and CU are compared with Danish data material from laboratory tests on suitable and less suitable subbase/capping layer materials. Special attention is paid to the drainage properties of sand and gravel materials. Different methods of determining the permability of sand and gravel materials is mentioned and discussed. Estimates of the permability of natural Danish materials can be made using the table or diagram prepared using Terzaghi's 1925 formula for permability. The permability can be estimated with reasonable accuracy on this basis, provided that d10 and d60 is known. The results indicate that the Danish specifications for subbase/capping layer materials ought to be made more stringent. A higher drainage ability would then be obtained. Demands for max 6% filler in the bottom layer and CU greater than 5 in the upper layer are proposed. The subbase/capping layers should be constructed with a density greater then 100% Standard Proctor. A Note will be published at a later date which will discuss the results of the laboratory tests on permability which are being currently being carried out at the National Road Laboratory, Denmark.
