PREDICTION OF CLAY BEHAVIOUR AROUND TUNNELS USING PLASTICITY SOLUTIONS
Simple plasticity solutions can be used to predict ground deformations and pore pressure changes as a tunnel is constructed in clay. Field measurements of sub-surface vertical and horizontal ground deformations in the plane perpendicular to the tunnel axis are shown to be reasonably consistent with predictions of a cylindrical contracting cavity in an idealised linear elastic-perfectly plastic soil. Movements ahead of an advancing tunnel heading are better predicted assuming spherically symmetric conditions. Measured pore pressure changes within the plastic zone around tunnels can be reasonably predicted by the simple linear elastic-perfectly plastic model. Poor predictions are obtained of pore pressures in the surrounding elastic zone: improved predictions are obtained assuming non-linear elastic soil behaviour in this zone.
