COMPACTION, MONITORING AND PERFORMANCE OF ENGINEERED FILL AT THE DIXON OPENCAST SITE, CHESTERFIELD, UK

Two areas within the major Dixon opencast site at Brimington, near Chesterfield, England, required engineering compaction in order to permit the construction of an industrial development and by-pass. The paper describes the approach to compaction trials, monitoring of compaction and instrumentation, which comprised the installation of surface monuments, magnetic extensometers, piezometers and a United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) gauge. The results of settlement monitoring for a period of up to 1700 days are described. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 859718.
