OLDER DRIVERS' USE OF ELECTRONIC AIDS

Drivers of ages between 55 and 86, together with a control group of younger drivers, have been tested on a driving simulator based on a video disc. Performance was recorded while carrying out a distance keeping task plus attending to a separation warning panel and cancelling a distracting l.e.d. The performance of most older drivers matched that of the younger drivers. Some older drivers had a significantly worse performance. All drivers responded to the warning panel by increasing the separation between their own vehicle and the car in front of them. Any electronic aid should be tested to demonstrate that there is a net benefit to safety and driver's convenience. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 859610.
