PULP HANDLING IN BULK USING TENSIONAL STEEL STRAPPING

Handling of several bales of pulp in one unit bound with steel strapping has been found to be safe and economical. Six or eight bales comprise a unit, which may weigh between 1200 and 2000 Kilos (2700-4400 pounds). Because of the rapid acceptance of this technique, conditions and guidelines are set down in this article. The weights and sizes of the units have been classified to facilitate packaging and handling. The steel straps and joints must be approved by the Inspector of Dock Labor, correctly fastened, and coded. Special lifting spreaders must be used, and the straps are inspected before each loading and discharge to make sure they have not been damaged. A check list has been compiled to record all information about the pulp cargo.
