SOME CONSIDERATIONS TO BE MADE WHEN CONTEMPLATING AN INERT GAS INSTALLATION

The inert gas system is presently accepted internationally as a safety feature on crude oil tankers. Its use has proven to be a positive preventative measure against explosions. If the system is to be incorporated on tankers in the future certain considerations must be made. If this method is used, a fire extinguishing system for on deck fires must be provided. The initial cost of the system is great, but it is offset by the reduction of tank surface corrosion, rendering extensive tank coating unnecessary. There is also a reduction of scale and sediment formation in the tanks. Cargo discharge rates are increased on tankers utilizing the inert gas system and tank repairs and hull painting can be done without tank cleaning and gas freeing.
