ROAD PICTURE AS A TOUCHSTONE FOR THE THREE DIMENSIONAL DESIGN OF ROADS
In three dimensional road design, the intention is to obtain from the beginning a harmonious combination of horizontal and vertical curves; the design has a flow alignment, and improves the driver's satisfaction and even his safety. Dimensions that are acceptable on the basis of traffic dynamics are often too small to produce a clear and attractive impression of the road. The most common disturbing or misleading elements in the road picture are kinks, short S-shapes, straight sections and double S-shapes. A visual representation of the road may be staking-out in the field; sketching calculated perspectives; scale modeling, especially of interchanges; and examining design problems of existing roads.
