DESIGN OF BRIDGES FOR DURABILITY AND MAINTENANCE

The framework of codes, standards and advice for the design of highway bridges in the United Kingdom is intended to cover all aspects of the design, specification and construction of such structures. However, there are important gaps in this coverage, particularly relating to the choice of bridge types and configurations at the conceptual stage, and to detailing for durability, inspection and maintenance. The Department of Transport intends to issue an Advice Note which will give guidance on these important aspects, so that the design of its bridges will in future be more effectively aimed at ensuring their durability and maintainability.
