The task of designing unitized cargo systems is so complex that our traditional design methods are often inadequate. The newly emerging techniques of systems analysis, however, are well suited to complex design problems, so that their adoption will be beneficial. This paper introduces these techniques to marine designers, with particular slant toward those working on unitized cargo problems. Two systems analysis steps that can be given adequate treatment in a paper of this kind are discussed. They deal with choosing and calculating a measure of merit, and constructing mathematical models. Two examples illustrate several of the key principles. Solution techniques and some related considerations are also covered. These topics include decision-making under risk or uncertainty, evaluation and reduction of problem size, optimization methods and dynamic programming, and use of reliability theory. A survey of optimization techniques is presented in the Appendix.
