SHIP VIBRATION--RECENT EXPERIENCE AND PROSPECTS FOR THE FUTURE
The growth trend in ship size, speed and horsepower has posed a challenge to designers, builders and owners inasmuch as little or no prior experience has been available to guide the way. This growth trend has created special concern and poses the possibility that severe vibration problems will be encountered in the future on single screw merchant ships. Performance of past and present ships indicates that a great need exists for suitable guidelines at the ship design phase to enable the designer to minimize propeller induced vibrations through selection of optimum after body lines and stern configuration. The first step in achieving suitable guidelines, however, involves preparation of a comprehensive plan. Discussion is presented on aspects of such a plan.
