THE DATA BASE: THE POTENTIAL FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION IN NINE SELECTED INDUSTRIES. VOLUME 7: GLASS. FIRST EDITION
The purpose of this study, contained in nine separate volumes, was to provide basic data on energy consumption in industry and to identify opportunities for energy conservation. Each volume is organized into 4 sections: section 1 is an introduction, section 2 describes the methodology employed in the study, section 3 contains executive summary tables of energy consumption data for each of the nine industries examined, and section 4 analyzes the data collected for one specific industry. Volume 7 discusses energy consumption data for the production sequence leading to the output of glass containers. The energy consumed in the overall production sequence is a total of 18.2 MMBTU/ton of glass containers. The cost associated with the production of one ton of glass containers is $7.20. Since the value of glass containers is $158/ton (from figures for 1970), the energy cost represents about 4.6% of the product value. The following items of particular interest are discussed: soda ash production, cullet, electric energy, furnace efficiency, and material substitution.
