A RATIONAL APPROACH TO PROPELLER GEOMETRY

A system of geometry definition and resulting mathematical relationships is presented for describing propeller blades as "ordinary" three-dimensional bodies. Topics discussed include coordinate system characteristics, foil section geometry, pitch helix relationships, calculation of coordinates, interpolation methods, surface normals, and planar sections. Applications and examples discussed include stress analysis, numerically controlled machinery, pattern construction, and dimensional checking of blades.
