ATTITUDES, OPINIONS, AND EXPERIENCES OF BUSINESS AND INSTITUTIONAL RELOCATEES DISPLACED BY HIGHWAYS UNDER THE 1970 RELOCATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Data were collected and the attitudes opinions and experiences were studied of a sample of 108 business and institutional relocatees who were displaced by urban & rural highway projects in Texas between January 1971 and January 1973. The typical business was a sole proprietorshop with less than 10 employees, and the typical person interviewed was at least a 50-year-old male. Over three-forths of the respondents relocated their business and continued in operation at least for a while. Sixty percent of those that ceased operations indicated that they could not find suitable replacement facilities. A majority of the business and institutional relocatees (informed of assistance by relocation personnel) thought their relocation payments adequate, but over half of the owners thought the pavement was not enough. A need was expressed for additional relocation services. A majority of the relocatees, however, gave the state's relocation program and its personnel, a high rating.
