WALKING ACCIDENTS OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS

To get a more complete picture of pedestrian accidents outside built-up areas and thereby creating a basis for accident prevention measures a Swedish study has been made of all pedestrain accidents which occurred outside built-up areas during 1968. The study was limited to accidents reported by the police in which a pedestrian was involved and which resulted in personal injury. The study comprised 393 accidents, 341 of which were classified as true pedestrian accidents. Accident data was classified and analyzed with reference to such factors as degree of injury, physical and environmental conditions. 346 pedestrians were injured in the 341 accidents. 24% were killed, 49% severely injured and 26% slightly injured. Older people received more severe injuries than younger people. The accident rate was highest in January, October to December, and Fridays. 42% of the accidents occurred during the dark. 79% of the accidents occurred when the pedestrian crossed the road. One-third of the actively involved pedestrians were younger than 15 and 1/4 more than 65. In 39 accidents pedestrians were influenced by alcohol. 25% of pedestrians 15-60 were under the influence. Effective prevention measures would include separation of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Road lighting must be introduced to a larger extent and headlights of cars be improved. Pedestrians should be more aware of the importance of using reflective material when walking at night.
