TIRE-PAVEMENT FRICTION AS A FUNCTION OF VEHICLE MANEUVERS

Limit manuevers were performed on different wet pavements with disparate passenger vehicles, and the vehicle available acceleration were compared with pavement friction indicators. Reasonably conservative estimates were made of vehicle cornering and/or stopping capability as a function of skid number measured at 40 mph. These extimates can be used to realistically evaluate pavement friction for expected maneuvers at individual roadway sites.
