PASSENGER TRANSPORT: PUTTING IT TO WORK. PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE CONFERENCE OF THE SAME NAME HELD IN APRIL 1992. CHAPTER 9. PUBLIC TRANSPORT LINKS TO AIRPORTS

This paper considers why public transport links have not been given greater importance in the development of airports. With the preponderance of traffic being due to staff vehicles the author argues the case for fixed public transport links in such areas. Catchment areas and factors influencing mode choice are examined. Travel patterns at a variety of airports are discussed. The anticipated effect of a Heathrow Express on modal split is considered. Routes from Heathrow to Reading and Feltham are also discussed. Connections between aircraft, terminals and check-in areas within airports are considered including moving walkways and peoplemovers.
