METHOD OF REPAIR FOR FATIGUE DAMAGE IN STEEL BRIDGES
This paper discusses some cases of fatigue damage occurring in steel road bridges in Japan, and considers an effective method of repairing such damage. Most fatigue cracking has been concentrated on secondary bridge members, such as transverse stiffeners with sway bracing members and gusset plates with lateral bracing members. These members are not subject to safety checking for fatigue resistance in conventional design practice. Their cracks occur simultaneously in bridges of the same structural type with similar weights, traffic volumes, and vehicle speeds. The cracks seem to be generated by local stresses, due to differences in the deflections of main girders with sway bracing members and the deformation of reinforced concrete floor slabs. To retrofit fatigue-damaged bridge members, the causes of crack occurrence and the extent of its damage must be investigated, to find a repair method that can eliminate the causes. Most fatigue damage occurs at welded joints, often starting from the toes of fillet-welded joints where stresses are very concentrated. The tungsten inert gas (TIG) arc remelting process increases fatigue strength and can be used to repair fatigue damage. It seems to reshape the profile of the weld toe, and raise the tensile strength by increasing the hardness of the TIG-processed area. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 858334. The French title of this paper is:- Methode de reparation de fissures par fatigue des ponts metalliques. The German title of this paper is:- Verfahren zur Reparatur von Ermuedungsschaeden an Stahlbruecken.
