MANUAL FOR DEICING CHEMICALS: STORAGE AND HANDLING

This report contains the results of a study conducted for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to minimize the loss to the environment of chemicals used in controlling snow and ice on highways. Based on the best current practices for highway maintenance as observed during two years of study, parctical guidelines are presented for good practice in the storage and handling of deicing chemicals. Covered storage of salt and other deicing chemicals is strongly recommended; permanent structures for this purpose are preferable. Guidelines are given for site selection and for design foundations, paved working area, and site drainage. Existing storage facilities are presented that represent a range of costs, designs, construction materials and storage capacities. For the handling of salt and other deicing chemicals, general precautions and good housekeeping practices are defined. Environmental responsibilities are discussed for personnel who administer and supervise highway maintenance. /FHWA/
