UNDERGROUND GOES FOR TOTAL RENEWAL
With track quality deteriorating, leading to an inferior ride, London Underground has embarked on a 10-year program to replace all 800 km of track on its network. The Track Replacement Project (TRP) was launched early last year to implement and manage the renewals, the need for which is now vital. Parts of the Underground's surface have been renewed with a modern track form, but much of the system retains bullhead rail and wooden sleepers. Traditional methods and practices are not adequate for the scale of work required, thus the increase in the annual rate of track renewal will be delivered through the enhanced TRP. The carefully chosen title expresses the philosophy of change that underlies the whole project, and which will provide enhancements to: engineering time; working methods; and resources.
