FRANGIBLE BASE ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE IN NEW JERSEY
The study procedure is detailed and the results are presented of an investigation into automobile accidents involving the impact of cast aluminum frangible base luminaire and traffic signal supports. The results show that from 5 to 7 percent traffic signals result in reported injuries. No fatalities have been reported in the recent past due to such impacts. The study concludes that any increased cost to decrease the momentum change of a vehicle impacting either a luminaire or traffic signal mounted on a cast aluminum frangible base do not appear to be warranted.
