EIGENVALUE SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS APPLIED TO DISC BRAKE SQUEAL

The performance of a disc brake system is studied through use of a twelve degree of freedom lumped parameter model. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors are used to define the system stability and mode shapes. A formal eigenvalue sensitivity analysis is employed to investigate the small perturbation behaviour in detail. A squeal type instability is studied and a number of design improvements, aimed at reducing the squeal propensity, are investigated. The sensitivity coefficients provide important design information in a way which is easily understood by the engineer. The resulting design methodology is demonstrated to provide an efficient means of improving the performance of the system. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 857625.
