THE ADELAIDE O-BAHN: HOW GOOD IN PRACTICE?
This paper summarises the methodology and results of a post- implementation economic evaluation of Adelaide's innovative O- Bahn Busway. Although the evaluation found that the Busway could not be justified on the basis of available data and conventional economic criteria, the project's small negative result was better than that usually achieved by public transport projects, and forecast benefits and objectives were generally realised. Significant unquantifiable benefits may well outweigh the negative outcome. In a city of Adelaide's size and urban density the O-Bahn Busway has been shown to be a more effective and economic means of providing public transport services than conventional bus and rail systems.
