VLCCS APPROACHING HARBOURS: STOPPING, TOWING, SHIP MOTIONS, SQUAT
The development trend of the very large crude carriers (VLCC) that are increasing in numbers is outlined. Handling of such ships in harbors is discussed. Calculation methods are described allowing the amplitudes of ship motions to be ascertained on a basis of sea sepectra. These calculations are carried out for a 225,000 tons tanker. Recently model tests were carried out to ascertain the squat of VLCCs in shallow water: this squat is known with a tolerable certainty for the 225,000 tons tanker proceeding at a speed of about 10 knots in shallow water of 25 m depth.
