HIGH TENSILE STEEL IN SHIPBUILDING
Use of high-tensile steel (HTS) in shipbuilding has been extended during the last few years and in order to study the production of steel having a lower yield point up to 43 kp/sq. m.m. (61160 psi) as well as production and economic aspects at the major shipyards and steelworks a joint research project on this subject was started in 1964. A tanker of 115,000 tdw was studied. Firms participating in the work were the three shipyards Eriksbergs Mek. Verkstads AV, AB Gotaverken and Kockums Mek. Verkstads AB and the three steelworks Domnarfvets Jernverk. Oxelosunds Jarnverk, Norrbottens Jarnverk. The Swedish Shipbuilders' Association and the Swedish Ship Research Foundation administered the work. The theoretical and experimental studies were carried out at the shipyards and the steelworks belonging to the collaborating group. The results of the investigation have been presented in Swedish in the following three volumes: "Studie i anvandande av stal med hojd hallfasthet i skeppsbyggeriet utford av svenska varv och jarnverk." Del 1: "Konstruktions-och produktionsaspekter, Malo 1966," 113p. Del 2: "Materialaspekter, Oxelosund 1968," 129p. Del 3: "Sammanfattning, Oxelosund 1968," 10pp. This report is an edited translation of "Del 3: Summanfattning, Oxelosund 1968" and gives the main results achieved by the study. The research project was financed by the companies of the group and supported by the Swedish Foundation for Scientific Research and Industrial Development (Malmfonden).
