TRAFFIC STUDIES AT AN ENTRANCE RAMP TERMINAL ON A TWO-LANE FREEWAY
TRAFIKSTUDIER VID RAMANSLUTNING TILL MOTORTRAFIKLED
This study deals with the effects on traffic of a change of design of an entrance ramp terminal in an interchange on a two-lane freeway. In the first case the entering traffic was controlled by a stop sign. In the second case the stop sign was removed and the entrance terminal was provided with an acceleration lane. Without the acceleration lane more than 50% of the merging vehicles used the shoulder for acceleration. With the acceleration lane about 15% of the merging vehicles tended to force their way into the through traffic lane at the end of the acceleration lane. The other vehicles continued on the shoulder if the through traffic lane was occupied, or decreased their speed on the acceleration lane. The provision of an acceleration lane resulted in a decreased number of overtaking manoeuvres. The time taken for vehicles in the interchange to merge also decreased, for passenger cars by 15-25 sec and for trucks by 20-30 sec, depending on the traffic flow. /TRRL/
