IN DEPTH STUDIES OF RURAL ROAD ACCIDENTS IN UPPSALA COUNTY DURING 1960-1971

This report reviews results and experiences from in depth studies of rural road accidents in Uppsala County for a period of about ten years, 1960-1971. The continuity in staff and technique has been maintained throughout the investigation. In a total of 895 accidents 991 motor vehicles were studied. Comparison is made between this material and the official statistics. The vehicles were carefully examined, and all technical defects or failures are reported, whether these defects could influence the particular accident in which the vehicle was involved or not. In 4 per cent of the accidents technical vehicle defects serious enough to have caused the accident, and in 12 per cent of a character to have contributed to the accident, were found. In the 991 vehicles, a total of 2384 defects which could influence safe handling of the vehicles was found. During this investigation, periodic vehicle inspection by the Swedish Vehicle Inspection Company was started in 1965. Since this year, the number and frequency of vehicle defects have decreased. The experiences from the accident investigations have influenced the experimental work on vehicle occupant safety during the entire period.
