BUCKLING OF CLAMPED DEEP SPHERICAL SHELLS
The paper deals with the buckling of clamped elastic deep spherical shells subject to a uniformly distributed external pressure. It is assumed that the prebuckling deformation of the shell is so small that the linear shell theory can be employed in the analysis. It is also assumed that the deflection pattern of the shell is shallow and the second order terms of the deflection slopes in the expression of potential energy can thus be neglected. Series solutions of the pre buckling axisymmetrical deformation are obtained. Based on the asymmetrical bifurcation with shallow buckling modes, buckling of the shell is then studied. The buckling load is expressed as a Rayleigh quotient and in turn solved by Rayleigh-Ritz method. (Author)
