DATA INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND GEOCODING
DATA-INFORMATIESYSTEMEN EN GEOCODING
The documentation of data to be used for spatial planning (both for planning research and the formulation of planning policy) requires some form of geocoding. As the various geocoding systems do not have a common basis, the actual situation can be described as chaotic. In this paper the author formulates some general criteria for a database and explores several methods of geocoding. The segment-oriented method having the street side as smallest unit, seems to be most fruitful. The so-called dime-system, developed in the U.S., is based on this segment-method. After having described the methodology of this method, the author mentions various applications in different countries. Finally, the Dutch situation is examined which provides a basis for drawing conclusions and the formulation of recommendations. For covering abstract for the conference see IRRD no. 215277. /TRRL/
