A SYSTEM TRANSFORMATION: STABILIZED GYROCOMPASS TO INERTIAL NAVIGATOR

The Marine Aided Inertial navigation System (MAINS) was planned around a newly developed, high performance stabilized gyrocompass (SGC) capable of being updated from other data sources. The MAINS concept was fully described in an Institute of Navigation paper titled "MAINS a New Marine Navigator" presented at the 27th annual meeting in June 1971. As a result of the need for increased performance and through continued development of the Flex Gyros and system techniques, the MAINS SGC has been transformed into Marine Inertial Navigations System (MINS) for use in those applications where accurate position data is not available from other sources for relatively long periods of time. This transformation has been accomplished without significantly increasing size, weight, or cost. In addition, the environmental capability, reliability, maintainability, and operability of the basic MAINS SGC has been retained. This paper begins by discussing in some detail, the differences between the SGC and inertial navigator. Improvements to the Flex Gyro related to increased system performance required in the navigator, are then discussed. Systems techniques, which provide the necessary enhancement margin are described next. These include gyro case reversal, "H" modulation, and the subsynchronous wheel supply. Hardware changes needed to accommodate the transformation are covered. Finally, it is shown how these elements are integrated to provide the desired characteristics of the MINS.
