TRANSPORT AS AN INDUCER OF URBAN CHANGE
Four factors are discussed as having led to an increase of traffic in cities. They are: 1) the increased number of people in cities, 2) the changing distribution of population within cities, itself influenced by developments in transport, 3) the growth in car ownership, 4) cars are used in the peak period rather than public transport. Town size is shown to be related to mode of travel to the central areas of cities during the morning peak. It is concluded that there is a strong interaction between urban development and transport. The last part of the paper briefly discusses intercity and leisure travel. The number of the covering abstract of the textbook is IRRD Abstract No. 212297. /TRRL/
