ARCTIC AND MIDDLE NORTH TRANSPORTATION
Neither time nor inclination has always permitted the fullest exchange of information among all of those interested in or knowledgeable about the Arctic. For this reason, The Arctic Institute of North America called into session from March 5th to 7th, 1969 a meeting of some of those whom it felt would wish to aid and participate in the dissemination of knowledge about the North in a day when populations are growing and the need for economic resources is rising. This publication is based on that meeting. It is an attempt to bring together into a single volume up-to-date information about the environment of the North and the resources to be found there as well as descriptions of various transportation systems and concepts as they may be applied to arctic use in resource development. The aim of the Symposium was for industry, university, and government experts to exchange experience and opinions on the transportation problems that affect the development of northern resources with a view to the solution of those problems. The solutions will result from more or less massive effort in research, analysis, and development for which it is hoped the Symposium has served as a catalyst.
