TRACKING OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES
ORNIERAGE DES ENROBES BITUMINEUX
The authors recall that creep is a permanent deformation phenomenon of flexible pavement layers, the existence of which is linked to the visco-elastic behaviour of binders used to ensure the cohesion of aggregates; its occurence rises in frequency with the duration and number of load application. There exist two different processes, which explain the occurrence of permanent deformations: creep itself caused by the application of a static load, and the accumulation of residual deformation due to repetitive loading. Among the inconveniences resulting from this phenomenon, the following can be cited: decrease in traffic safety because of the deformation of the road profile and presence, in wet weather, of a thick permanent water film on the road; danger of excessive saturation of pavement layers through the formation of water puddles; difficulties for the maintenance crews to counteract deformations and need to remove the bituminous mixtures before tracking. The aim of the study is to list the various standard and new laboratory tests for studying creep and to compare their results with pavement behaviour. An attempt is made to cite the main principles of mix design which seem to be the most likely to succeed in preventing tracking. Special mention is made of the Duriez-Marshall tests, the cone penetrometer Hubbard field test and new tests such as tests on cold-coated bituminous mixtures, static and dynamic tests and tests on hot-coated mixtures. The covering abstract of the conference is IRRD abstract no. 101124. /TRRL/
