AN OVERVIEW OF LEADING SHIPBUILDING ORGANIZATIONS ABROAD

The purpose of the trip was to observe practical applications of system analysis to ship design with particular emphasis on fabrication. The meeting of key men in the industry was considered to be of foremost importance, because of the opportunities afforded for interesting discussions. Due to the unprecedented increase in size of some ships built abroad, such as tankers, as well as the impressive shipyard installations for their construction, the author considered it also helpful to become acquainted with the shipbuilding environment in this new, much-enlarged scale. Due to the wide scope of the trip, no special effort was made to gather detailed information on shipyard methods and techniques. Attention was concentrated rather on observing shipbuilding trends. The itinerary included primarily visits to some of the most advanced shipyards in Japan and Europe, although several universities, ship research centers, and classification society offices were included.
