THE OFFSET SYSTEM-STATUS AND APPLICATION CONCEPTS
The offset system, which was developed to satisfy the need for the placement of lighting poles outside the clear roadside area, has demonstrated improved visibility which is the result of the system's uniformity, the lessened eye adaptation problems, and the lower system glare. The luminaire (output has a roadway intercept of approximately 25 degrees) is designed to mount directly to a pole top tenon and has a vertical tilt adjustment so that it can be tilted to optimize its performance for various application parameters. Data from test installations show that the offset system provides a high vertical illumination level for good visibility of objects ahead on the roadway. The pavement luminance observed from a given point under the offset system is extensively uniform, and no direct relationship is noted between measured horizontaal illumination and observed luminance.
