MICROCOMPUTERS IN TRANSPORTATION. COMPUTER APPLICATIONS ON THE CENTRAL ARTERY/TUNNEL PROJECT
The background of Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) prject is described, and the analyses needed for the project performed by the transportation planning group are noted. The use of microcomputers, and the variety of software are discussed. The travel forecasting model for the CA/T project is designed to estimate the effects of different project alternatives during and after project completion. These effects relate to traffic volumes and speeds. Computer use in traffic engineering is also described, and the benefits and challenges of microcomputer use are noted. These computers have enabled a great increase in productivity
